Fixing a Leaky Pool

With our climate, it’s no wonder pools are so popular amongst home owners. They provide a great way to cool off during the hot summer months and provide a great place for you and your family to relax.

It’s Not all Roses Though

The downside of owning a pool is that there is some maintenance involved. You will need to maintain the quality and quantity of water in the pool.

The more you use your pool, the more pool maintenance and pool supplies you will need. Swim Play Relax Pool and Spa can help you to get all the requisite supplies in order to keep your pool sparkling and clear all year round.

Should you not have the time, or interest, in doing the maintenance yourself, Swim Play Relax Pool and Spa can work with you to set up a schedule for them to come in and do it for you. They then come in and ensure that your pool is kept clean and that all the pool equipment is in good working order.

More Serious Problems

Even the most well maintained pools are eventually going to show some signs of wear and tear. The most common pool problem is a leaky pool. A leaky pool may not sound dangerous – it may simply seem inconvenient – after all, you will just need to top up the water.

However, a leak can be more serious – you will battle to maintain proper water quality as a result of bacteria being introduced through the hole.

Checking for a Leak

Look for cracks in the pool itself and also for loose tiles. Also watch the water for signs of soil entering the pool.

You can verify that there is a leak by marking the pool???s water level by the skimmer. You can do this with a grease pencil. Check again 24 hours later – there should be no more than 70 mm water loss. If the level drops more than that, there is probably a leak.

Locating the Leak

Your first step is to switch off the filtration system. Monitor how far the water level drops to get the general idea of where the leak is. Should the level only drop as far as the skimmer, the leak is likely to be in the filtration system. The water will drain until just below the level of the leak.

Once the leak is found, it is time to call in the professionals. You need to fix the problem as soon as possible as it will only get worse over time.
